(ATR)Andrew Young says that on Sept. 18, 1990, he was "overly confident" Atlanta would win the 1996 Summer Olympics.
In this edition of ATRadio, the United States Ambassador and former mayor of Atlanta speaks with Around the Rings editor Ed Hula about the 25th anniversary of the IOC vote in Tokyo.
"Everything seemed to be right about this," Young says of the timing of Atlanta's bid for the Games.
"It was something I thought Atlanta needed.I thought the Olympics needed Atlanta."
As mayor of Atlanta, Young agreed to former ACOG president Billy Payne's plan to bid for the 1996 Games.The former U.N. ambassador is credited with winning international support for the bid.
George Hirthler, a leading Olympic bid consultant, spoke withATRlast week about a celebration planned at Centennial Olympic Park to mark the anniversary.
The invitation-only event will gather almost 400 attendees who were involved in Atlanta winning the 1996 Olympics, Hirthler toldATR.
Payne, the keynote speaker for the event, will introduce Young.
This is the first of two major celebrations that are going to take place between 2015 and 2016, Hirthler said. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
