Almaty’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Kazakhstan does not include a plan to share events with the capital of Astana, according to Around the Rings.
Earlier this month, Kazakhstan’s president said of the Olympics, "it was agreed to hold the event in two cities, that is, Astana will be also involved," without detailing the involvement.
Astana is 600 miles northwest of Almaty. The two cities shared events for the 2011 Asian Winter Games. The Boston Globe reported Astana could be used for Winter Olympic ice events.
The International Olympic Committee approved changes to the bidding process earlier this month, including allowing events to be held outside the host city or, in exceptional cases, outside the host country, notably for reasons of geography and sustainability.
The IOC will vote to determine the 2022 Winter Olympic host — either Almaty or Beijing — on July 31 in Kuala Lumpur.
