(ATR) Airlines in Japan are collaborating to develop sustainable aviation fuel for flights during the 2020 Olympics.
Tokyo 2020 sponsors All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines are leading a consortium of 46 airlines to develop the fuel along with global airline developer Boeing.
The goal is to develop fuel that will reduce carbon footprint in Japan before the Games. The group aims to reduce emissions by 80 percent with the new biofuel.
"Building on our longstanding relationships in Japan, we are committed to help reduce aviation's carbon emissions and its reliance on fossil fuel," George Maffeo, Boeing Japan president, said in a statement.
ANA and Japan Airlines are second-tier sponsors of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the first in the organizing committee’s domestic sponsorship drive.
Rio 2016 Signs Airline
Athletes will arrive to the Rio 2016 Olympics on TAM Linhas Aereas.
Rio 2016 secured TAM Linhas Aereas (TAM Airlines) and TAM Viagens (TAM Travel) as sponsors for the Games in the official airline and hospitality categories.
TAM Airlines will serve as the official airline of the Games and will transport athletes to and from Rio de Janeiro. It will also ensure that the Olympic flame will make its way from Olympia, Greece to and around Brazil for the Olympic torch relay.
TAM Travel will now sell hospitality packages to the Games, and offer special itineraries for travelers who book through the company.
"We are pleased to have the support of two companies who are leaders in the Brazilian travel and transport industries in our mission to deliver an excellent and memorable Games," Carlos Nuzman, president of Rio 2016, said in a statement.
"The extensive reach and expertise of TAM and TAM Viagens will be a great help to us in the task of providing an outstanding experience for the thousands of tourists who will come to Rio for the biggest sporting event on the planet."
Close to 15,000 athletes will be traveling to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
