AIBA's pro-boxers meet in final series of bouts before first title fights

Lausanne, 11 December 2014 – The world’s best professional boxers compete in the final pre-ranking bouts of the AIBA Pro-Boxing competition (APB) this weekend before the first title fights take place in January 2015.

The boxers take to the ring knowing that their ranking in the APB will make the difference between earning automatic qualification for the Rio 2016 Games, or not.

In Italy, local hero and twice World Heavyweight Champion Clemente Russo hopes to keep his title hopes alive – and recover from an unexpected defeat in the second round of the competition’s pre-ranking phase – when he faces the Kazakh boxer Anton Pinchuk.

Winning his bout would most likely pit Russo against the man who defeated him last month, the young Russian Aleksey Egorov, to become the first Heavyweight Champion.

In Istanbul, hometown boxer Adem Kilicci, AIBA World Championships bronze medalist, tops the Middleweight bill when he faces Hosam Abdin, the All-Africa Games bronze medalist. Winning this bout would give either man a certain shot at the title.

And in Sofia, French Light-heavyweight Mathieu Bauderlique, a multiple national champion, takes on Ehsan Rouzbahani, a London 2012 Olympian, for a place in the title match.

Next weekend will see bouts for Light Flyweight, Flyweight, Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight and Super Heavyweight. The final Bantamweight pre-ranking bout will take place in early January.

The Defending Champion and Challenger in the title fights next June in each weight category will qualify automatically to compete in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
