The LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund stand with the black community and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The focus of our efforts is to create equity for children of all races and backgrounds in youth sports – as well as support the good work of our many grantees across Southern California. Equity is the common thread that stitches together every facet of our work.

Our mission inspired the founding of the Play Equity Fund as a social justice movement, to include young people in sports and structured play programs left behind by the current system.

Our stance collectively is that violence, police brutality and injustices against the black community must end. George Floyd is only the latest in a tragic procession of parallel events that have plagued our country. Lasting, impactful change in society demands courage and commitment from all of us.

We are a foundation and a public charity that utilizes sport to build social change and creates conditions for kids to succeed. The programs we develop and nurture are for all youth, with no one left behind. We use sport to drive change in communities. Our focus is on leveling the playing field to provide access and opportunity for children who need it most. This demands dedication and support, and with the need as great as the potential for so many of the young people that we work with across our communities, we encourage you to join us. You can support this effort and be part of the Play Equity Movement. We are grateful for your help.

The LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund will continue to help build brighter futures for children with our many partners in youth development by utilizing the transformational benefits of sports. We will work to provide youngsters with safe spaces to be supported, be more healthful, and help them develop skills and capabilities to be critical thinkers and potential leaders. We believe this investment in the future will help lead to a better tomorrow.

Leading the LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund are significant responsibilities. So is supporting our grantees – and helping our marginalized brothers and sisters in communities across this city. Equity is rooted in our collective mission, and these values are paramount to the dedicated and diverse team who joins me daily.

We are united in our belief that we are obligated to do more. I am a black woman and wife, with two teenage sons. I’m a third generation Angeleno who cares deeply about this city, and a former Deputy Mayor of Economic Development and Housing. I visited South Los Angeles in the aftermath of the civil unrest in 1992. Growing up, my mother shared her memories about the uprising in Watts in 1965.

I am also a U.S. Army veteran, where I served as a military police officer. My belief in law and order pales in comparison to my belief in the value of black lives, and justice. There is no going back to what was. The LA84 Foundation and Play Equity Fund are committed to using our platforms and influence to drive long-term change.
