(ATR) Hong Kong will host the 11th Gay Games in 2022.
The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) General Assembly chose Hong Kong over Guadalajara, Mexico and Washington, DC in a vote in Paris on Monday.
A record number of 17 cities had expressed interest in hosting in 2022, 13 of them in the United States.
Hong Kong will be the first Asian host of the event, which has been held every four years since 1982. It was conceived by Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete.
Paris is hosting the next Gay Games from August 4-12, 2018. The city of Paris formally signed on as a partner for the 10th edition at the same press conference where the 2022 announcement was made. As part of the agreement, Paris will implement a program to promote the Games and their values of sharing and inclusion with the general public and the sports community in particular.
The 2018 Gay Games will feature 36 sports, 14 cultural events, an academic conference and up to 15,000 participants from 70 countries.
The FGG says the Gay Games is the largest sport and culture event in the world open to all. Participants to do not have to be gay.
