(ATR) The Atlanta Olympics included a volunteer program that assigned one executive-level volunteer to each National Olympic Committee. Envoys were to help ensure everything ran smoothly for the team outside the field of play. This meant Southern hospitality was always on display, ready to be pressed into action whenever necessary.
Around the Rings Publisher Sheila S. Hula was assigned to the tiny Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu. The team included two athletes who qualified and two "invitees" who also participated in the Olympic experience.
Hula and her driver, Ron Bolin, made sure the athletes were able to do everything, from going shopping to getting to interviews – and, of course, to competition. Here are some of her memories from the day they accompanied the four athletes to a training session on the campus of Georgia Tech and from one of their competition rounds.
