$7 Million Payday for St. Petersburg

A study from PwC says 2013 SportAccord could generate more than $7 million for the host city of St. Petersburg.

Robert Gruman, Pwc Russia and CIS Advisory Leader and manager of PwC’s Olympic Movement relationships, made the announcement Monday with SportAccord Managing Director Nis Hatt. PwC conducted the study under its partnership with SportAccord.

Gruman said the study preliminarily finds $6.5 million to $7 million in "direct spend", money delegates use on hotels, taxis and eating out during the convention. That study, Gruman claimed, is a conservative guess.

Following SportAccord, Gruman said PwC will analyze questionnaires from delegates to get a more accurate spending picture.

"The overall economic perspective is fantastic from a city standpoint," adding the final tally could be revised upward.

"We’ve been relatively conservative on the estimates from a purely financial perspective so I anticipate it being slightly more than [$7 million]."

He added the findings could be used by other cities for what to expect, adding he thinks 2013 is on the "low side" of what a city could see in direct spend during a SportAccord.

Olympic Capital to Olympic Host?

Lausanne is studying a bid to host the 2020 Youth Olympics.

In a statement, Mayor Daniel Brélaz, said the Games would be a way for Lausanne to "give something back to the Olympic Movement."

"Back in the summer of 1915, Baron Pierre de Coubertin chose our city to be the home of the modern Olympics," he said. "Exactly 100 years later, in the exact same place, the IOC will make the decision on the host of the third Winter Youth Olympic Games. If our city was to go that far, we believe that it would be a great way for us to give something back to the Olympic Movement which has given us so much over the last century."

The Games would use three clusters, with ice events and the Youth Olympic Village located downtown, alpine skiing in the Alps and Nordic events in the Jura region.

A decision on whether to bid by the Swiss Olympic Association is expected in "the coming months," the statement said.

New ARISF President

Raffaele Chiulli, president of the International Powerboating Union, was elected president of the Association of Recognised International Sports Federations.

Chiulli defeated challenger Carlos Freitag, president of the World DanceSport Federation on Monday.

The election took place during the ARISF General Assembly at the SportAccord Convention in St. Petersburg.

The Italian said that ARISF was "at a crossroads." He campaigned on a platform to help ARISF members join the Olympics, to "protect" ARISF members and establishing the ARISF Convention "to breed a new value proposition, renew the corporate image and allow ARISF to work closely with the IFs for the revitalization of our sports."

Panasonic, Sochi reach agreement

Panasonic extended its Olympic sponsorship to the Sochi 2014 Olympics, adding the household appliances category for the upcoming Games.

Dmitry Chernyshenko President and CEO of Sochi 2014 called Panasonic a "perfect fit" for the Games.

Panasonic, already is a TOP Sponsor, having the audio-visual category for its IOC sponsorship.

England to stage Cricket World Cup

The International Cricket Council announced that England and Wales will host the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The event will take place in June 2019 and be played in ten venues. Ten countries are expected to participate in the 2019 edition.

"The signing of this agreement now enables ECB to enter into Staging Agreements with venues who wish to stage matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019," said England and Wales Cricket Board Chief Executive David Collier.

"The ECB is honoured to have been selected to stage one of the largest and most important global sports events which will be a wonderful boost to sport and cricket in particular throughout England and Wales."

England last hosted the event in 1999.
