$7 Million Payday for St. Petersburg
A study from PwC says 2013 SportAccord could generate more than $7 million for the host city of St. Petersburg.
Robert Gruman, Pwc Russia and CIS Advisory Leader and manager of PwC’s Olympic Movement relationships, made the announcement Monday with SportAccord Managing Director Nis Hatt. PwC conducted the study under its partnership with SportAccord.
Gruman said the study preliminarily finds $6.5 million to $7 million in "direct spend", money delegates use on hotels, taxis and eating out during the convention. That study, Gruman claimed, is a conservative guess.
Following SportAccord, Gruman said PwC will analyze questionnaires from delegates to get a more accurate spending picture.
"The overall economic perspective is fantastic from a city standpoint," adding the final tally could be revised upward.
"We’ve been relatively conservative on the estimates from a purely financial perspective so I anticipate it being slightly more than [$7 million]."
He added the findings could be used by other cities for what to expect, adding he thinks 2013 is on the "low side" of what a city could see in direct spend during a SportAccord.
Olympic Capital to Olympic Host?
Lausanne is studying a bid to host the 2020 Youth Olympics.
In a statement, Mayor Daniel Brélaz, said the Games would be a way for Lausanne to "give something back to the Olympic Movement."
"Back in the summer of 1915, Baron Pierre de Coubertin chose our city to be the home of the modern Olympics," he said. "Exactly 100 years later, in the exact same place, the IOC will make the decision on the host of the third Winter Youth Olympic Games. If our city was to go that far, we believe that it would be a great way for us to give something back to the Olympic Movement which has given us so much over the last century."
The Games would use three clusters, with ice events and the Youth Olympic Village located downtown, alpine skiing in the Alps and Nordic events in the Jura region.
A decision on whether to bid by the Swiss Olympic Association is expected in "the coming months," the statement said.
