The 2020 European Championships in Kyiv, 21-26 April 2020, has been postponed due to the COVID-19 situation.
We are still in a very difficult situation in Europe with the Covid-19 virus spreading rapidly across the Continent. Serious measures are being taken by governments to contain the spread and notably gatherings are being limited, players are restricted from practicing regularly and travel is being restricted.
On Friday 13 March 2020 BWF announced a suspension of all BWF sanctioned tournaments up until 12 April, but since then more cancellations have been added to the international calendar, and for the time being it is not possible to put an end date to the many restrictions.
As a consequence, the Ukrainian Badminton Federation and Badminton Europe, in close consultation with BWF, have decided to postpone the 2020 European Championships that was due to be held 21-26 April in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The three parties have been in daily contact throughout the last weeks, closely monitoring the situation around the spread of the Covid-19 virus and the many national restrictions caused by this. At this stage we see no other option than to announce a postponement of the event.
In this connection it is important to state that both the Ukrainian Badminton Federation and Badminton Europe are working hard, together with BWF, to find new suitable dates for the 2020 European Championships to be played in Kyiv. The local organizing committee have made a tremendous effort in making these championships successful for all players, officials, fans, sponsors, media and other stakeholders, and they remain keen to welcome everybody in Kyiv later in the year.
The President of the Ukrainian Badminton Federation, Oleksii Dniprov, would like to share the following with anyone affected from this postponement:
- Our country is really sad about this whole situation as we truly want to host a great event for all of our guests. We assure you that we will continue our strong efforts and we look forward to welcoming all of Europe’s best players, officials and fans in Kyiv once the global situation has stabilized.

- The health of the athletes, spectators, volunteers, technical officials and other people attending the Championships goes before the sport. My hope is that we can find a date later this year where the Championships can take place, and I am looking very much forward to go to Kyiv when these difficult times are over.
