The 12th Gwangju World University Badminton Championship (WUBC) will take place from Nov. 6~11, 2012 at Yeomju Gymnasium and Bitgoeul Gymnasium. The WUBC hosted by International University Student Federation (FISU) is a single sport competition held every other year, alternating with the Universiade years. The WUBC is the first-ever badminton competition hosted in Korea for university student-athletes, and 190 athletes from 19 countries including Russia, China, Japan, Spain, England and Germany are participating for individual or team events.
From Korea, the Olympic gold medalist Yee Yongdae (Kyungki Univ., 24) - Kim Kijeong (Wonkwang Univ., 22) pair and 10 other athletes submitted the competition application. The badminton powerhouse Spain from Europe also will be in the game with the world-class athletes including the world ranking no. 26 Pablo Abian and Beatriz Corrales in the team. 36 athletes are from China, Hong Kong and for the first time in the history of WUBC, Iraq and Uganda sent off athletes for the Championship.
The WUBC begins on the 6th at 9 A.M. with the team preliminary. Finals are on the 3rd day into the Championship, November 8th, and 5 individual events will start on the 8th afternoon with Round of 64 and the champion will be determined from the finals on the 11th.
For their first-ever WUBC in Korea, the 2012 Gwangju WUBC Organizing Committee placed 2,200 work force into the Championship preparation, much of them being the volunteers. Through smooth operation of the WUBC, the OC is going enhance the operation skills for the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade.
Shuttle Friends is the 1,500 volunteers-workforce to help the Championship to run smooth, especially in 21 areas of services including protocol, language service, game operation and cheering for each participating countries.
During the Championship, various agencies including the National Police Agency, the City’s regional offices, exemplary driving agency and Marine Corps alumni will collaborate with the OC to help with the logistics and transportation operations.
Along with the competition, many cultural events will be up to spice the badminton festival for athletes’ and spectators’ pleasure. Also events such as photo zone, nail art and face painting will be awaiting the visitors at the Championship.
An official from the OC said "This Championship is prepared to offer the world the festival for world university students through sport and to build experiences of running an international sporting event before the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade," and added "we anticipate to enhance the international sporting event operation skills such as game facilities, volunteer work force and game operation through the Championship."
