Gwangju World University Badminton Championship concluded on Nov. 11 after successfully completing all the games for 11 days from Nov. 6, with 173 athletes participating from 18 nations.
In particular, the Beijing Olympic gold medalist Lee Yong-dae played the game and the cheering of 700 citizen and university student supporters and 3,000 spectators heated up the event.
The Total Integrated Management System (TIMS) operated during the Championship provided real time information on the games and the experts’ smooth and systematic proceeding of the game was highlighted. In addition, umpires and FISU representatives praised that the Championship was a great success by thorough management from accreditation to athletes’ village and transportation.
Mr. Kang Un-tae, Chair of WUBC Organizing Committee and Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, remarked at his closing speech, "Let me extend my deepest gratitude to all the volunteers for their efforts to faithfully carry out their roles in various fields including interpretation and parking assistance." He also added, "Through this Championship, we will do our best to fully prepare for the EPIC (Ecoversiade, Peaceversiade, ITversiade, Cultureversiade) of 2015 Gwangju Universiade based on our experience and knowhow of operating an international sport event."
The FISU representative, Alison Odell praised, "This was the best badminton championship that perfectly prepared for accommodation, meals and transportation thanks to the support of Korea University Sports Federation and under the great leadership of Mr. Kim Yoon-suk, Secretary General of 2015 Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee."
Korean players composed of excellent university students beat China at the final to 3:0 after beating Taiwan at the semi-final and finally won the first place in a mixed team tournament.
Lee Yong-dae and Kim Ki-jeong team of men’s double won the gold medal both at the mixed team tournament and the individual men’s double. In particular, Kim Ki-jeong also won the mixed double with Kim So-young winning 3 gold medals.
Korea national team had the best achievement throughout the Championship winning 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 4 bronze medals, while Taiwan national players won 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal taking the second place.
