(ATR) The Vancouver 2010 flame travels through an area of Canada known as “New Iceland” on Day 69 of the torch relay.
Yesterday highlights include the torch traveling through 11 towns, being carried by one Olympian and reaching Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. One local torchbearer carried the Olympic Flame in a classic General Motors car through the town of Steinbach.
Today, the torch relay departs the rural municipality of Gimli located in the Interlake region. The town and surrounding districts were once an Icelandic ethnic block settlement and the area, known as “New Iceland”, is home to the largest concentration of people of Icelandic ancestry outside of Iceland.
The flame heads north and reaches the Peguis First Nation, the largest First Nations community in Manitoba. The citizens are of Ojibway and Cree descent.
The Olympic Torch reaches its final destination point of the day in the city of St. Laurent located on the shore of Lake Manitoba. Many of the residents are Metis and the town is officially a bilingual community.
Tomorrow, the torch travels through 11 towns and will be carried by one Olympian in Winkler. A chief will carry the Olympic Flame in the back of a horse-drawn wagon through Portage la Prairie.
