For the 15th consecutive year, Around the Rings Golden 25 is poised to name the personalities who will be the most influential for the Olympic Movement in 2011. Along with the official rankings compiled by the staff of Around the Rings, the 15th edition of the Golden 25 will include an opportunity for subscribers to vote for the person they think will be most-influential in the coming year.
"The Golden 25 is a look-ahead survey of the people who will have an impact on the Olympic Movement in the year ahead," says ATR Editor Ed Hula.
"The choice often depends on what events are ahead for the year, such as an Olympic Games or the World Cup in 2010, which put FIFA president Sepp Blatter at number-one.
"Sometimes governance issues are the driving force, such as 1999, when Dick Pound took top spot as the leader of the IOC inquiry into the Salt Lake City vote-buying scandal," says Hula.
"For 2011, without an Olympic Games on the calendar, the choice for number-one will reflect a behind-the-scenes event that could influence the Olympics for years to come. We’ll reveal all on January 3rd," says Hula, referring to the date the number-one choice will be released at AroundtheRings.com.
In the first edition in 1997, the late IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch -- then at the peak of his 20-year tenure as head of the IOC -- held the top spot.
Since then, Olympic figures such as current IOC president Jacques Rogge, NBC Sports & Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol and London 2012’s Sebastian Coe, have came in at #1. Rogge is the only person to have held the top spot more than once (2002, 2003).
FIFA President Sepp Blatter earned the number-one spot in this year's Golden 25 because of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the implications it might have for a successful bid for the Olympics from Africa.
The countdown for the 2011 Golden 25 begins Dec. 22 with the release of the 24th and 25th rankings.
"Over the years, a place on The Golden 25 has been one of the most coveted nominations in the Olympic Movement. We think it speaks to the reputation Around the Rings has built over the last 20 years as the single most authoritative publication focussing on the Olympics," said Publisher Sheila Scott Hula.
