1400 starts at ISSF Rifle & Pistol World Cup Munich

From the 18 through the 23 of June, the last ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage of the year is conducted in Munich, where 24 Olympic Quotas will be distributed.

2011 has been a year of records, for the ISSF World Cup Series, with an incredible turnout of athletes. And the last Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage of the year made: with 890 athletes, and more than 1400 starts, this is going to be the largest World Cup Stage ever in history of this competition.

Athletes from all around the world arrived in Munich to compete in the ten Olympic events of Rifle and Pistol shooting, aiming at the 24 Olympic Quota Places to be awarded there. This is indeed one of the last chances to qualify for the 2012 London Games, before the continental championships that will be conducted between July 2011 and February 2012.

"Numbers are incredible!" The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said during the ISSF Administrative Council in Munich, commenting on the turnout of athletes of the fourth and last Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage of the year.

"Munich’s is a big range, one of the best shooting sport venue of the world, but even here we are on the edge. It’s the first time that we record such a high participation in a world cup stage, since the series was launched in 1986." Mr. Schreiber added.

The 2011 ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Series travelled from Sydney (AUS) to Changwon (KOR), passing through Fort Benning (USA) before landing here in Munich, where the last Rifle and Pistol Stage is conducted. More than 2400 athletes participated in the Series since March, which distributed 96 Olympic Quota Places. The Series will be closed by the Rifle and Pistol World Cup Final taking place in Wroclaw, Poland, from the 18 to the 24 of September this year.
