(ATR) A tree stands in London this Christmas as a gift from one Olympic city to another. Lillehammer, Norway is the donor of the 10-meter tree that's been decorated at an east London school.

"Look upon this tree from Lillehammer as a sign of friendship, and as a strong wish that you in London will succeed in your efforts to create successful Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012," Lillehammer Mayor Synnove Brenden Klemetrud says in a letter that accompanied the tree.

The tree arrived last week, shipped by ferry and truck to Saint Paul's school in Tower Hamlets. The school is near the site of the future Olympic Park site.

The students covered the tree with hand-made decorations carrying Olympic-themed messages, such as "love and piece at london olompic 2012".

Jason Gardner, an Olympic track and field gold medalist, presented the tree to the school.

"As soon as I switched on the tree lights, the kids spontaneously asked for a race. So we went to the playground and had a run around," says Gardner.

Prior to 2012, LOCOG hopes to line up tree donations for schools in each of the other four Olympic boroughs near the Olympic Park.
