Eric Staal scored Canada's second goal. (IIHF)(ATR) The International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships end with gold for Canada, silver for Finland and a bronze for hosts Russia.

Canada topped Finland 4-2 in the final match at Khodynka Arena in Moscow on May 13.

Earlier in the afternoon, Russia led Sweden during the entire bronze medal match for a final 3-1 win.

Bronze winning aside, Russia capitalized on the tournament to promote the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic bid.

Bid CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko and Russia’s Sport Minister Viacheslav Fetisov were part of the delegation at the tournament.

“We built Khodynka Arena on time and on budget in 14 months,” said Fetisov at a May 12 press conference.

“The success of the World Championship proves to the Olympic family that we can deliver a quality event,” he continued.

During the tournament, leaders of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation announced they will not sign a player transfer agreement brokered by the IIHF and the National Hockey League.

Under the proposed deal, European teams would allow the NHL to buy out players’ contracts for $200,000.

The deal was signed without Russia; now it is the only major hockey country not to be covered by a transfer agreement.

By not signing the agreement, Russian players can now be plucked for NHL teams without compensation.

While there was high attendance at Mystichi and Khodynka Arenas for the games, TV ratings have not been as good in many areas. In Germany, where six games featuring the country’s team were shown live, ratings averaged 540,000 people. Overall, Germany was 3-5 for the tournament, finishing in 9th place.

The next IIHF World Championship is scheduled for Canada in 2008. Switzerland will serve as host in 2009 and Germany hosts in 2010.
