(ATR) Daegu, South Korea will host the 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championships, Moscow in 2013. The two cities were selected by the IAAF Council in Mombassa, Kenya. It’s the first time the IAAF has selected championship hosts for two consecutive events.
Daegu beat Moscow, Brisbane and Barcelona in the vote for 2011, with Moscow’s taking the second vote for 2013.
The vote counts were not released.
The IAAF championships will be a first for both South Korea and Russia. Daegu is South Korea’s third-biggest city, with a population of more than 2.5 million, about 3 00 km south of Seoul.
With Korea and Russia also in the midst of bidding for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, expect bid committees from both countries to salute the IAAF vote as confirmation of the ability of each to host world-class sports events.
Korean Olympic Committee President Jung Kil Kim was in Mombassa for the IAAF vote, as was Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The 2007 IAAF world championships are in Osaka, Japan. Berlin will host 2009.
