Tokyo 2020: Regarding the International Paralympic Committee's announcement on Wheelchair Basketball

Guardar

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) informed Tokyo 2020 that the sport of wheelchair basketball could be removed from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games programme.

We understand that it is the IPC which governs the Paralympic sports and their respective international federations and that this issue has arisen as a result of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) not complying with the IPC Athlete Classification Code.

Games Preparations including ticket sales are already underway, and so many people are looking forward to the events - athletes who are preparing for the Games, staff involved in their preparations, the host city of Tokyo, volunteers, and those who have already purchased tickets. We are hoping that the IWBF will take swift action to rectify this situation.

In any case, as stated in the IPC announcement, wheelchair basketball is still one of the sports in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games programme at this time, and as the Organising Committee responsible for the Games' operation, we will continue our preparations under the current status of the sport.
