(ATR)Some federations hoping for inclusion in the 2020 Summer Olympics are celebrating, while others will have to put their Olympic aspirations on hold.
On June 22, Tokyo 2020 organizers announce a shortlist of federations for inclusion in the Games.
The Additional Event Program Panel sorted through 26 interested applicants including baseball and softball, bowling, karate and squash.
The short-listed applicants will present to the panel and organizing committee in early August, with a deadline for Tokyo 2020 to submit its final additional events proposal to the IOC by September 30.
Final confirmation for the sports added to the Tokyo 2020 program will be made at the IOC Session in Rio in August 2016.
IOC Centenary
The IOC celebrates its centenary in Lausanne June 26-28 with a variety of festivities that are open to the public.
The celebration begins on the evening of Friday with a centenary race and walk that finishes in the Stade Pierre de Coubertin.
Over the weekend, Lausanne will open the doors to a few of their sport organizations including IOC headquarters, the Olympic Museum, and the former office of Olympic founder Pierre de Coubertin.
The Lausanne railway station will coordinate with these locations to offer more free exhibitions through the middle of October.
Olympic Day
The international sports world is celebrating Olympic Day on June 23.
Over 160 countries celebrate Olympic Day each year to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894.
Events that take place during Olympic Day promote fitness, well-being, culture and education, and the three Olympic Day pillars--move, learn and discover.
The United States Olympic Committee will work with some 10,000 Olympians and Paralympians on Olympic Day programs across the U.S. through June 30.
Competition in Baku
The first-ever European Games officially opened in Baku on June 12.
Russia leads the medals table right now with host country Azerbaijan on its heels.
At the end of the Games, organizers say some 7,000 athletes from 50 NOCs will have competed in 20 sports.The closing ceremony takes place on June 28.
Olympic Boxing Qualification
Over 250 boxers from across the United States, hoping to compete at the 2016 Rio Games, will travel to Colorado Springs this week for an Olympic trials qualifier.
The Colorado city will stage competition for those vying to qualify for Rio 2016 at City Auditorium, June 22-27.
In the end, 26 athletes will clinch spots in the Olympic boxing trials.
The event in Colorado Springs is the third Olympic trials qualifier for the men and the second for women’s weight divisions.
FIFA Women's World Cup
Competition in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup carries on in Canada.
Matches on Monday include: Norway v. England and the U.S. v. Colombia.
Japan and the Netherlands square off on June 23.
The top three teams from the Union of European Football Associations will qualify to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Twenty-four teams from six confederations are competing in 52 matches at the FIFA Women's World Cup this year.
Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg will host matches. Competition ends on July 5.
Basketball World Championship
The International Basketball Federation is staging the U19 men's world championship in Heraklion, Greece.
A game between Argentina and Turkey will open competition on June 27.
The final is set to take place on July 5.
Olympic-Style Event for Public Safety Officers
The 2015 World Police and Fire Games open on June 26 in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The event is an Olympic-style competition for public safety officers from across the U.S.Officers will compete in 61 sports at 52 venues across the National Capital Region.
The opening ceremony will take place at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington D.C.
