Vienna, 22 October 2018
Come 9 January 2020, handball fans across the world will witness a premiere, as this day marks the start of the Men’s EHF EURO 2020 (9 to 26 January): the first to be played in three countries; the first to be played with 24 nations and the first that finishes with the final in a football stadium.
Less than 15 months out of the championship’s start, fans have the opportunity to save themselves the best seats in the house, as ticket sales start on 24 October at 11:00 hrs. Tickets can be bought via the official website, www.ehf-euro.com.
The launch coincides with the start of the EHF EURO 2020 Qualifiers, featuring 32 teams out of which 20 will qualify for EHF EURO 2020, as well as the first matches of the EHF EURO Cup, a new tournament format featuring 2020 hosts, Sweden, Austria, Norway, and EHF EURO 2018 champions, Spain.
Tickets will be available for all stages of the tournament in all three countries. While single day tickets across all categories will be available for the matches played in Sweden, the focus will be on group and venue packages in Austria and Norway for this first ticket release.
Further ticket releases are planned for 9 January 2019 (‘One year to go’), 17 April 2019 (Easter release) and for 1 July 2019, as all 24 participating will be known by then. It also known already that Sweden will play the preliminary round in the Scandinavium in Gothenburg; Austria start in the Stadthalle in Vienna and Norway in Trondheim.
If they qualify, Denmark will play the preliminary round in the Malmö Arena, Croatia in the Stadthalle Graz and Germany in Trondheim. The ‘New Nidarohallen’ – the venue is currently being built – in the Norwegian city is the only arena that hosts two preliminary round groups.
The first matches in Graz (group A) and Trondheim (group C) are played on 9 January. 10 January will see the action being started in Vienna (group B), Trondheim (group D) and Gothenburg (group F); group E in Malmö joins last on 11 January.
Final weekend over three days
The main round will be played in Malmö and Vienna, while the final is played in Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena, a 20,000 capacity stadium. When it comes to the final weekend, fans will experience Sweden’s capital as it lives and breathes handball for three days.
Following a unique change of the playing schedule, the EHF Executive Committee confirmed in September that for the first time, the match for third place and the final will be played separately from each other, with the bronze medal match to be played on Saturday, 25 January 2020, and Sunday, 26 January, being exclusively reserved for the final.
With the semi-finals on Friday, 24 January, as well as matches on Saturday and the final on Sunday, the final weekend has been extended to three-day long handball party, which will be framed by a high-level entertainment concept.
In the new schedule, the 5/6 placement match will be moved from Friday, 24 January, ahead of the semi-finals, to Saturday, 25 January, when it will take place ahead of the match for third place.
