Team USA won three silver medals in the time trial as the handcycles raced through the streets of Nottwil on the third day of the 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.

In the morning session, it was Alicia Dana (Putney, Vermont) and Will Groulx (Portland, Oregon) who medaled in the races held on the shorter 7.1-kilometer loop.

Out of 12 competitors in the women’s race, Dana grabbed the runner-up spot behind Francesca Porcellato of Italy. Dana was securely in the silver position as she held off the Renata Kaluza of Poland by 46 seconds.

"I worked really hard today and feel satisfied with my result," Dana said. "It wasn’t gold today, but I had some pretty tough competition. I’m looking forward to the road race."

After missing the first two world cup races of the season due to injury, Groulx proved that he was still in top form as he took the second spot in the H2 race. Groulx finished behind Luca Mazzone of Italy, but more than 29 seconds ahead of Tobias Fankhauser of the host nation.

In the afternoon, the athletes moved to the longer course (15.5km) where they faced an unrelenting climb followed by a steep decent with tight turns. Sanchez earned his podium spot on the climbing, but moved into the runner-up position with his technique on the decent.

"I capitalized on what I saw as my opportunity to win, which was the flat section and the decent," Sanchez said. "I knew I could lose the race on the climb, but I had nothing to lose and everything to gain on the decent. So I’d be the first to admit that I got a little reckless out there, but it paid off. I was hanging off my bike in the corners and I left it all out there."

Sanchez finished 39 seconds behind Alex Zanardi from Italy and 13 seconds ahead of Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa.

Other top performers for the day included Oksana Masters (Louisville, Kentucky) who finished fifth in the women’s H5 race; Dan Cnossen (Topeka, Kansas) who took sixth in the men’s H5 race and Will Lachenauer (Reno, Nevada) who finished seventh in the men’s H3 race.

After three days of competition, Team USA owns ten medals (two gold, six silver, two bronze) to tie Germany in the overall medal count.

Competition resumes tomorrow with the cycle and trike road races and runs through Sunday, Aug. 2.
