(ATR) György Sallak of Hungary confirms he will be one of three men vying for the top job at the International Skating Union.
Sallak plans to submit his official candidature file to the ISU at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston that begin March 28.
His candidacy was announced by president of the Hungarian National Skating Federation Lajos Kósa at a press conference in Budapest. Sallak is the director general of the national federation and also serves as the ISU development coordinator.
Sallak is vying to succeed ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta along with fellow candidates Didier Gailhaguet of France and Christopher Buchanan of Britain. Cinquanta has been at the helm of the federation since 1994.
Gailhaguet’s candidacy has been viewed with some controversy due to his involvement in the 2002 Salt Lake City judging scandal. Gailhaguet received a three-year ban for his actions and now serves as the president of the French Ice Sports Federation.
Buchanan is the finance director of the National Ice Skating Association of Great Britain and has also held the position of chairman of the ISU Synchronized Skating Technical Committee for the past six years.
Other likely candidates include ISU speed skating vice president Jan Dijkema of the Netherlands and former U.S. figure skating president Patricia St. Peter.
Candidates have until April 25 to submit their candidature files to the ISU. The skating union will decide on its next president at the ISU Congress to be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia from June 6-11.
