Three years previous to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) has already defined six training bases for Team Brazil in the Japanese capital and surroundings. This Sunday, June 25, COB chairman Carlos Arthur Nuzman signed a Facilities Utilization Contract with the chairman of the Japanese Olympic Committee Tsunekazu Takeda and with officials of the Japanese districts and towns to enable the usage of the venues by Brazilian athletes before and during the Games. Agberto Guimarães, COB sports director, was also present at the ceremony in Tokyo.
"We are sure that the Brazilian athletes will benefit from the best structure in the final preparation phase for the Tokyo Games. The facilities are of the highest quality and we are very pleased to be able to provide our athletes with all the conditions to train and adapt the best way possible to the local climate and time", said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, who competed in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo with the Brazilian men’s volleyball team.
In order to define the Team Brazil training venues in Japan, COB made five trips to that country. COB was the first National Olympic Committee to visit the venues and thus could make the best choices.
The main support base for Team Brazil in Tokyo will be at the University of Rikkyo. The forecast is that around 120 athletes from ten different disciplines will be using the venue. Sagamihara should receive eight disciplines and almost 90 athletes. Apart from the entire training and recovery structure for athletes, COB will dedicate special attention to catering. In the main Team Brazil support bases, athletes will be able to enjoy Brazilian cuisine and feel at home while in Japan. COB will also set up for the first time a restaurant in a school nearby the Olympic Village for those who wish to eat Brazilian food.
Hamamatsu will be the house for judo and swimming. The judo team has just spent a period of training in Japan and approved the venue.
Enoshima, Ota and Koto are the other Brazil Team preparation venues. The disciplines to be allocated to each venue are still to be defined and will be announced according to athletes’ qualification for the Games.
Similar to what happened during the Olympic Games Rio 2016, COB will also put up a hospitality center close to the Olympic Village, in Chuo, where athletes will be able to meet with their families and friends with privacy.
