The Oceania National Olympic Committee recently met with the President and Vice President of the Solomon Islands National Olympic Committee on the occasion of the XIVth Pacific Games in Noumea.
The ONOC Secretary General pursuant to the concerns and decision of the Executive Board of ONOC decided that a meeting with NOCSI leadership was in order to fully address the concerns of the ONOC Executive regarding unresolved cases involving past NOCSI Executive Board members and staff.
Also of concern were the management of NOCSI funds and the destruction of NOCSI property at the Honiara Multi Purpose Hall, which had been funded through grants from ONOC.
Furthermore, NOCSI has not been able to force accountability regarding an Olympic Solidarity funded Archery Course to which the person responsible has yet to be held accountable.
It is the intent of ONOC in collaboration with the current NOCSI Executive to liaise closely with them during this difficult situation. ONOC has offered the assistance of a very strong sports administrator who not only understands the culture but also speaks the language, which is a positive step towards accountability.
ONOC in conjunction with NOCSI has agreed to safeguard the opportunities for Solomon Island athletes as they prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
It is in the best interest of NOCSI to have all those concerned, past and present, supporting this initiative of sports governance.
