HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani , Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) announced that the Legendary swimmer, double Olympic gold medallist Oussama Mellouli, was named as an ambassador for the schools Olympic program (SOP).
In a press conference held on Friday on the sidelines of the SOP finals, Sheikh Saoud said that he is delighted by hosting the world and Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli who also claimed 15 gold medals at the 2011 Arab Games in Doha.
The press conference was attended by the QOC Secretary General HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the QOC Sports Affairs Director and President of the Qatar Swimming Association (QSA) Mr. Khaleel Ibrahim Al Jabir and Oussama Mellouli.
Mr. Khaleel Al Jabir announced launching "Oussama Mellouli Swimming Academy" which aims to develop swimming in the state of Qatar under the supervision of Mellouli.
Al-Jabir who is also LOC Chief Executive Officer of the SWC Doha 2014, stressed that the SOP aims to stimulate young people in Qatar to participate in sports activities and bring together Qatar’s best young school athletes.
The QSA chief said that Mellouli was an inspiration to the entire Arab world. "Everyone knows what a great champion he is," said al-Jabir.
"As a top athlete he is aninspiration to the Arab world and beyond and that is why we named our project the Oussama Meloulli Swimming Academy." he added.
Al Jabir confirmed that the QSA has great confidence that Melouli effort through the academy will educate , train and turn the children and young generation into world swimmers. As well as the Academy is open for all citizens and expatriates.
The proposed Academy will include multiple training programs for different age categories who will be in domestic and external training camps, where Melloulli and his Assistants will rehabilitate the swimmers in a positive manner" said Al Jabir.
For his part, Oussama Mellouli extended his appreciation to HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani for inviting him to attend the SOP finals and said that the SOP encourages young student to practice sports.
Mellouli was also delighted by new academy and said "I’ll start a school for youngsters, to be called the Oussama Mellouli Swimming Academy, in co-operation with the QOC and the Qatar Swimming Association. It’ll be open to swimmers from Qatar and the wider Arab world. I hope to give something back to the sport which gave me so much"
"I will put in my best efforts to ensure that we have a program that will produce the champions of the future. I will focus on training and conditioning and we will have regular visits by top coaches and swimmers to guide the students at the academy," the 30-year-old added.
