(ATR) Around the Rings has learned that a gold medal has been sent to Japan from the International Olympic Committee for hammer thrower Koji Murofushi. Murofushi was declared the Olympic champion after the original gold medalist, Adrian Annus of Hungary was stripped of the title over a doping-related violation.
ATR has been told by the IOC that the medal was sent to Japan even though it is still waiting for Annus to surrender the gold medal won on August 22.
The Japanese Olympic Committee plans to hold a medal ceremony for Murofushi in the coming days. He is the first Japanese to take the gold in the hammer throw.
An IOC source says that developments are expected from Hungary by Monday that could bring the return of the medal from Annus.
While Annus tested negative for performance enhancing drugs in Athens, officials believe a second sample they tested was from a different athlete. Annus refused three additional chances to provide another sample that might have cleared his name.
A parliamentary committee meeting in Budapest Friday was supposed to consider the case of Annus and the four other positive doping tests for Hungarian athletes at the Athens Olympics.
In addition to the forfeiture of the hammer throw gold, Hungary also lost the discus gold medal when Robert Fazekas could not provide a complete urine sample after the competition.
A spokesman for the Hungarian Olympic Committee tells ATR that Annus has promised to return the gold medal after previous refusals to surrender it.
