(ATR) The United States Sports Academy awarded Phil Hersh its 2016 Distinguished Service Award.
The USSA said Hersh’s "commitment to reporting on the global world of sport, including his notable coverage of the Olympic Games," was the reason for his nomination, in a release. Hersh was a longtime reporter at the Chicago Tribune, and he covered 18 Olympic Games over his distinguished career.
Hersh received the award at a small ceremony in Chicago at the home of Dr. Robert Goldman, Academy Board of Visitors Chairman.
"Mr. Hersh was gracious and expressed his appreciation for this award, which honors his many contributions to sports journalism that have been enjoyed by literally millions of people over nearly 40 years," Goldman said in a statement. "His work has covered a wide range of sports, and consequently has captured the interest of a wide range of athletic enthusiasts. His writing has been a true public service."
After retiring from the Tribune, Hersh started his own independent website "Globetrotting by Philip Hersh," and contributes to publications such as TeamUSA.org and Around the Rings.
"We congratulate Phil for the award," ATR Editor Ed Hula said. "It is a testament to the talent and influence of Phil Hersh and a major reason we are happy to have him as a contributor."
