(ATR)Demolition of the Tokyo National Stadium, centerpiece of the 1964 Olympic Games, began on Thursday.
The structure was originally slated for demolition last July, but the process was postponed thanks to bidding problems and mismanagement by the Japan Sports Council. It will last until September.
Construction of the new National Stadium is set to start in October. Organizers plans for the new 80,000-seat stadium will be complete in time to house the 2019 Rugby World Cup, as well as the 2020 Olympic Games.
The stadium designed to replace the National Stadium, designed by award-winning British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, was originally criticized for its size and cost.
Although the designs have been scaled down, the stadium is still estimated to cost over $1.3 billion.
