ANOC Assembly

The Association of National Olympic Committees gathers this week in Moscow for its biennial general assembly.

It’s the first time in 30+ years Mario Vazquez Rana won’t be at the helm after his resignation last month.

Interim president Sheikh Ahmad Al Sabah of Kuwait is scheduled to lead the meeting so long as he’s confirmed Tuesday by the ANOC Executive Council and Thursday by ANOC at large.

The biggest moment so far in the race for the 2020 Olympics comes Saturday when the five bidders deliver their first presentations to date. Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo will get 10 minutes each.

After a round-robinamong each, the top two Group A teams automatically advance to Friday’s semifinals while the third-place team from Group A plays Group B’s runner-up and the fourth-place finisher from Group A faces the Group B winner in a pair of quarterfinals.
