Mexico Studying 2024 Bid
The Mexican government is studying a bid for the 2024 Olympics.
Earlier this week, a group was formed to conduct a feasibility study for a bid.
Mexico last hosted the 1968 Olympics.
The Mexican Olympic Committee did not respond to requests for a comment.
A 2024 host city will be selected in 2017.
Bids are possible from the United States, France, Italy and South Africa.
Rio Appeals for Federal Police
The governor of the state of Rio d Janeiro has appealed for federal help to combat the city’s gang problem.
On Friday, Sergio Cabral visited Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, to ask for federal police to be deployed in Rio.
Reports say gang violence has increased in recent months, including an attack on police on Friday that left three police injured from gunshot wounds and saw three police sub-stations burned.
South Korea Appealing Kim Yuna Decision
The Korean Olympic Committee filed an appeal of the judging in Sochi that led to figure skater Kim Yuna’s silver medal.
In a statement, the KOC said they would work jointly with the Korean Skating Union to file complaints with the International Skating Union’s disciplinary committee.
"The ISU will be asked to see if there was a violation of ethical rules by the judging panel."
Despite an error-free performance, the Korean skater finished second in the women’s singles competition to Russian skater Adelina Sotnikova. Pressure from dissatisfied fans prompted the KOC to question the results.
Putin Praises Sochi Police
Vladimir Putin praised the Russian police force for their security work in Sochi.
The Russian president thanked policemen for "professionalism and responsibleapproach, respectful attitude to guests, athletes and Sochi residents," according to a report from ITAR-TASS. The comments were made on Friday at an Interior Ministry meeting.
"You have not only ensured security, but also have created a good atmosphere," he added.
Blanco Visits Cuba
Alejandro Blanco, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) paid a visit to his Cuban counterpart this week to increase cooperation between the two Olympic Committees.
The Prensa Latina news agency reports that the meeting with Blanco and Cuban Olympic Committee president Jose Ramon Fernandez was the first meeting with a Spanish Olympic official in Cuba since 2008.
Blanco also received a briefing on preparations for the upcoming Judo Grand Prix event in Havana.
