Stockholm; 31 May 2019: Stockholm’s iconic Olympic Stadium, proposed venue for the aerials and big air competitions at the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, plus the Closing Ceremony, last night played host to the IAAF Diamond League, as the Swedish capital continues to demonstrate its credentials as a world-class host of elite competition.
The Stockholm Olympic Stadium is the oldest Olympic sports venue in use today, a living example of Olympic legacy that is also home to the Swedish Olympic Committee. The 117-year-old stadium has been the stage for 83 athletics world records, more than any other venue. More recently it has established itself as a leading host of professional big air events in skiing and snowboarding that have routinely attracted over 26,000 fans to the city-centre spectacle.
"If Sweden is elected to host its first ever Winter Games in 2026, the world’s oldest Olympic stadium would host some of the newest Olympic disciplines," said Stockholm Åre 2026 CEO Richard Brisius, whose office overlooks the field of play at the Olympic Stadium. "That sends a really compelling message about the enduring power and relevance of the Olympic Movement today. We are using what we have, where we have it, building on tradition and proven expertise to showcase new sports in creative ways. That kind of fresh-thinking is the ‘Made in Sweden’ approach."
As well as skiing aerials and big air in skiing and snowboard, the Olympic Stadium will also have a prominent role in the Stockholm Åre 2026 Closing Ceremony – a dazzling, multi-venue event designed to create a national ‘street party’ atmosphere and give athletes a more personal, intimate and inclusive Ceremony experience.
"Stockholm’s Olympic ‘Stadion’ has a special place in the hearts of athletes and sports fans around the world," said Swedish IOC Member and Olympic high jump champion Stefan Holm. "This venue has been part of the fabric of this city and Sweden’s sports culture for generations. It would be a spectacular centrepiece for a city-wide celebration at Stockholm Åre 2026, and it would help us reach a new generation of young people by bringing the modern Winter Games right to their doorsteps for the very first time."
