John Petersson - IPC Presidential Candidate Update

Dear Friends,

In three weeks, the IPC General Assembly will elect its new leaders for the next four years. It is an important occasion for all our members to express their voice and influence the direction of the Paralympic Movement going forward.

However, I have learned that a number of our members will not be able to join us in Abu Dhabi. Not because they are unwilling, but because their organisation simply cannot afford them to. This is unfortunate, because only by ensuring every member has their voice heard can we make our democratic process stronger and more durable.

I believe that listening to and recognising the members’ needs is a big part of building a Paralympic Movement that works towards social inclusion and values diversity. This means that I will acknowledge the diversity and interests of all our member organisations and sports, allowing room for everyone to contribute. It also means that I will work hard to increase direct support to NPCs, where the backing from governments is not sufficient to support the athletes and the organisation in its mission. It is my goal that at our next General Assembly all members are able to attend and have their voice heard. No member, no sport and no athlete will be left behind.

As a CEO and auditor I have always worked for the professional values of transparency and in my positions in the Paralympic Movement, I have always taken an athlete-centred and solution-oriented approach. I believe in team work and in the democratic process and as president, I want to ensure more inclusiveness and transparency in all aspects of decision making.
