(ATR) Budapest 2024 officially has the support of the government.

The Hungarian parliament voted 151 to 33 to support the bid on Jul. 7, the final approval needed before the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) can submit a bid.

Last month, both the Olympic Committee and Budapest city council voted to support the bid, paving the way for a parliamentary vote.

The ruling party Fidesz, along with the Christian Democrats, voted in favor of the bid according to a report from the AP with only the opposition left voting against.

"Today's vote has an important message: sport brings people together and it is worth dealing with the idea of organizing the Olympic Games," Zsolt Borkai, the head of the MOB, said to AFP.

The bid will cost $2.7 billion with the MOB suggesting the 2024 Games could raise $4.1 billion generating a $1.4 billion surplus.

The Hungarian Olympic Committee now has until September 2015 to submit a letter to the IOC stating Budapest as the country’s bid city, with a full bid due to the IOC by Jan. 8, 2016.

Boston, Hamburg, Paris and Rome are the other confirmed bidders for the 2024 Olympics.
