(ATR) A dastardly email was sent to the world’s Olympic media, purporting that Lviv 2022’s CEO was fired due to his Russian heritage.

The press release purportedly from the "Lviv 2022 Bid Committee" said Sergej Gontcharov is a Russian citizen and "was fired to avoid speculations on Ukrainian and Russian relations." Russia has annexed part of Ukrainian territory and Russian troops are said to be in parts of Ukraine.

Officials from Lviv 2022 did not return requests for comment and an IOC spokesperson said the IOC understands the email is false.

Around the Rings has received no direct confirmation that the email is a hoax. However, Sportcal reports that the email was in fact fraudulent.

Several signs indicated the email is fraudulent, including the email address: medialviv2022@gmail.com. Other Lviv media emails came from a Lviv 2022 domain, and the press release used different fonts, perhaps indicating a hastily-performed hack job. Photos accompanying the "release" also misspelled Gontcharov's last name.
