Badri Patarkatsishvili was elected in 2004 for a four-year term as NOC president.(ATR) The president of the Georgian National Olympic Committee says that "current leadership" makes it impossible for him to work with the committee.

Badri Patarkatsishvili has submitted his resignation to IOC president Jacques Rogge.

"My open and honest position regarding the issue of Georgia’s future no longer coincides with the position of the current leadership. I believe it impossible to continue to work in the position of committee president, therefore, I have decided to resign," reads the letter.

Media tycoon Patarkatsishvili blames the government for arranging a special meeting of the GNOC executive that voted him out of office late in the night of Oct. 8.

The IOC says the meeting was illegal and that it does not recognize the results.

The country's sport minister says that the GNOC has lost confidence in its leader and that Patarkatsishvili has no option but to resign.

Georgian Winter Sport Federation president George Topadze was named interim GNOC president at the late-night meeting. The GNOC plans to hold presidential elections on Oct. 29.
