22 January 2019 – Amman/Jordan: Generations For Peace and Laureus Sport for Good have announced a new partnership designed to engage Syrian refugee and Jordanian youth in local host communities. The partnership includes a generous grant from Laureus Sport for Good, which Generations For Peace will use over the course of one year to implement its renowned Sport For Peace programming in 36 selected schools across Jordan.
The specially-designed sport-based games and activities aim to foster social cohesion, resilience, and youth leadership among Jordanian and Syrian refugee youth, reflecting Olympic values of friendship, respect, and excellence shared by Generations For Peace and Laureus.
In addition to programme implementation, Generations For Peace will leverage its extensive experience in programme facilitation to conduct capacity-building sessions to reach 72 Jordanian teachers, expanding their knowledge of Sport For Peace curricula and activities. In addition to these trainings, two regional gatherings will be held for teachers to discuss challenges and successes, share best practices, and engage with one another in horizontal learning. The programme will conclude with a participatory evaluation involving 100 youth participants, as well as quantitative and qualitative data analysis from 900 members of the target group.
Mr. Edwin Moses, Chair of Laureus Sport for Good, commented: "This exciting new collaboration is a natural marriage of two organisations who both share a passion for sport and the power of sport-based approaches to transform individuals and communities. We were delighted to host Generations For Peace at recent Laureus Sport for Good Summits in Sweden and the USA, where we identified Generations For Peace as a world-leader in sport-for-peace programming and research with incredible depth of experience and a rigorous approach tested and proven in diverse conflict contexts. Amidst the largest refugee crisis in human history, we have seen the unique opportunities and impressive impact of sport-based approaches in vulnerable communities, and this support to Generations For Peace will help further serve communities in need in Jordan. We look forward to learning together and identifying ways to develop our partnership for greater impact."
Generations For Peace Founder and Chairman, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan, stated: "I am extremely pleased to see this collaboration between Generations For Peace and Laureus Sport for Good. Laureus is a global leader in sport for development, with unparalleled experience supporting quality programming and research around the world to harness the power of sport for good in the most vulnerable communities. And Laureus shares our philosophy that the most sustainable impact comes through empowering youth to lead change in their own communities."
He added, "I am especially glad that our first-ever collaboration with Laureus centres on our sport and life skills programming in Jordan, which strengthens social cohesion, resilience, and leadership amongst Jordanian youth and Syrian refugee youth who are under enormous pressures in host communities. Laureus’ valued support contributes directly to the efforts of this programming, which is further supported by partnerships with the Ministry of Youth and UNICEF that aim to both continue and expand these peacebuilding opportunities."
