(ATR) German supermarket giant Edeka has signed up to support Hamburg’s Olympic bid.

Hamburg 2024 CEO Nikolas Hill and his counterpart at Edeka Markus Mosa inked the sponsorship agreement on Tuesday.

As a national partner, the retail company will support the bid’s promotion nationwide in the run-up to the September 2017 IOC vote.

Hill said the support of Edeka, headquartered in the port city, would raise the profile of the city’s Olympic ambitions through its 4,000 shops across Germany.

"With the signing of the contract before the referendum Edeka shows its trust in our concept and sets a signal for the upcoming months," he said, speaking of the Nov. 29 vote that will decide the fate of Hamburg's OIympic quest.

Mosa saidEdeka was backing the bid "because the Games in 2024 are a unique opportunity for the city and the people".

Edeka was a partner of Hamburg’s Olympic mission from the moment the city announced its bidding intentions; it has sponsored the ‘Fire & Flame’ initiative since the start of 2015.

"We are experiencing the idea of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024 in Hamburg, and enthusiastic and convinced about the concept," Mosa said.

The marketing concept of Hamburg 2024 includes three categories: national partners, suppliers and 'friends of the bid'.

Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome are the other cities vying for the 2024 Olympics.
