(ATR) The Durban 2022 bid for the Commonwealth Games has a logo and a website.
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee unveiled the logo on Feb. 19 along with a website for the bid: Durban-2022.com.
"Sport is deeply rooted in South Africa’s history," Tubby Reddy, SASCOC chief executive, told Sport 24, a South African sports news agency.
"Over the years, it has been a catalyst in creating a spirit of togetherness within our democracy and hosting major sporting events has greatly contributed to our socio-economic development."
Durban is the only city bidding for the Games after Edmonton withdrew its intention to bid on Feb. 10. The city will launch its official bid on Mar. 2 at a ceremony in London.
Durban’s bid will be the first Commonwealth Games to take place in Africa. This marks the first time since 1999 that there is only one bidding city for a Commonwealth Games.
"The Durban bid team has been enthusiastic and ambitious from the outset and we are confident they will lodge a strong bid on March 2," the CGF said to ATR on Feb. 11.
"The bid will then undergo a thorough evaluation process prior to a report being presented to the CGF membership who will have the final decision at their General Assembly in September."
