Curl Aberdeen agree three-year World Mixed Curling Championship hosting partnership

Aberdeen, Scotland – Curl Aberdeen and the World Curling Federation have today, (Thursday 18 June) agreed a three-year hosting partnership for the World Mixed Curling Championship, with the initial championship taking place from 10–17 October 2020.

After successfully hosting the World Mixed Curling Championship 2019 and the World Junior Curling Championships 2018, Curl Aberdeen, in Scotland brings important hosting stability to the World Curling Federation's youngest world championship which plays a vital role in the development of the sport.

World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness said: "I am pleased that we have been able to create this partnership with Curl Aberdeen. They have shown their continuing desire and commitment to bring international curling to Scotland following the successful hosting of the World Juniors Championships in 2018 and last year's World Mixed Championship.

"With this partnership they have given a home to our newest world championship and an important discipline in curling's development. Holding the championship in the same venue for the next three seasons allows our smaller Member Associations the opportunity to plan ahead for the opening event of our curling season and I'm positive Curl Aberdeen will continue to produce first class events."

Curl Aberdeen Manager and 2014 Olympic silver medallist, Tom Brewster said: "We are delighted to be hosting the World Mixed championship for the next three years. We have a great working relationship with the World Curling Federation so forming this partnership was an easy decision for us.

"We want to build on the success of the events we've previously hosted and the World Mixed Championship is a fun and social event. It gives many of the newer curling nations their first world championship experience and we're happy to play our part in the sports development while welcoming the curling community into our club and to the city of Aberdeen."

The World Curling Federation and Curl Aberdeen are monitoring the guidelines from the Scottish Government and international health authorities with regards to the ongoing situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19). The championship is expected to go ahead without disruption; however, the health and safety of the athletes, spectators and event staff is of the utmost importance. Evaluations on the viability of running the championship will continue over the next few months as the global situation develops.

The World Mixed Curling Championship is an open entry event, for the World Curling Federation’s 64 Member Associations. Mixed curling consists of two female and two male athletes – with no alternate – and follows the same rules as ’traditional’ curling with the exception that games will be played up to a maximum of eight ends.
