At the United States Capitol, Los Angeles 2024 Candidature Committee leaders and California Congressmembers today announced a bipartisan US House of Representatives resolution in support of Los Angeles’ bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The bipartisan Congressional resolution is the latest expression of popular and political support for LA 2024. The US bid has already received the enthusiastic backing of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama; the unanimous vote of the Los Angeles City Council; and the introduction of a bill of support in the California legislature.
The Congressional resolution states: "the Congress of the United States expresses the sincere hope that the United States will be selected as the site for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and pledges its cooperation and support toward their successful fulfillment in the highest sense of the Olympic tradition."
Congress members Lucille Roybal-Allard, Janice Hahn (D-CA), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) were joined at the Capitol by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, and LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations Janet Evans. The meeting was also attended by more than 100 Los Angeles business leaders who participated in the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce's Access DC program to advocate for city and state priorities in Washington DC. The bipartisan resolution will be scheduled for a vote during this session.
Along with the bid’s strong political backing, a poll conducted in January and February of 2016 by Loyola Marymount University shows that 88% of Los Angeles residents support hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.
Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) said: "Los Angeles' bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a bid for the entire nation, and this resolution reflects that. Our country knows from experience that hosting the world’s greatest sports event can have profound and positive sporting, social, and economic impacts. I urge my congressional colleagues to follow the sun to LA, and help us bring the Olympic Games back to the City of Angels."
Congressman Steve Knight (R-CA) said: "LA 2024 represents the right event in the right city at the right moment for the United States, and that is why it has earned bipartisan backing in Congress. I am confident in LA 2024’s ability to deliver a Games that will benefit people of the Greater Los Angeles region and the entire United States."
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said: "On behalf of the millions of Angelenos who support LA’s bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, I would like to thank the Congress members for introducing this resolution and for giving their colleagues the chance to show their support. LA is a city with the Olympics in its DNA, and we are honored to have been selected as the US bid to bring the Games back to our country for the first time in 28 years."
LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said: "The IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020 stresses the importance of fitting the Games into the long-term vision of the hosts. With every show of support we get, we are demonstrating more clearly LA 2024’s alignment with the future of our city, our state and the rest of the United States. To us, LA 2024 is an opportunity to welcome the world back to America for a celebration of unity and humanity in the new Los Angeles."
LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations Janet Evans said: "It is always exciting and humbling to see the enthusiasm we feel for the Games back in LA also here in our nation’s capital. LA 2024 is creating a low-risk, fiscally responsible Games concept that taps into the Californian spirit of innovation and optimism. That unique combination is the reason we are seeing such unified, passionate support everywhere, from Angelenos and Californians, to the US sports community, to City Councilpersons and members of Congress."
