(ATR) China won the first gold medal of the 18th Asian Games in Wushu, the Chinese traditional martial arts.
Peiyuan Sun topped the podium in Wushu men's changquan. He showed his confidence as the sixth athlete to compete. He scored a 9.75 the same score he received to win gold at the the 2015 World Championships also in Jakarta.
Marvelo Edgar Xavier won the silver medal, the first medal for the host country Indonesia at the 2018 Asian Games. Marvelo gave his almost perfect performance as the second to last athlete to compete. He scored a 9.72, 0.03 points lower than Sun's B score. He came up just short despite of a lot of cheers from Indonesian spectators.
"I knew if I performed well I can win the gold, so the pressure from the Indonesian athlete was mainly due to him competing in his home ground," Sun said to reporters after the event. "I wanted to thank everybody for the support. I am glad that I didn't let you down."
More than 40 sports and 420 medals will be awarded at the 2018 Asian Games co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia.
