CGF Chief Executive David Grevemberg Awarded Honorary Degree For Leading Glasgow 2014

Commonwealth Games Federation CEO David Grevemberg has been given one of the highest honours by a top Scottish University for his leadership role in the hugely-successful Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

At a ceremony in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall yesterday (Tuesday, November 25), Professor Pamela Gillies, CBE, Principal and Vice Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University conferred on him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University.

Delivering the formal Laureation address, Professor Lesley Sawers, Vice Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Glasgow Caledonian University, paid tribute to David’s early sporting career as a wrestler and his work with the International Paralympic Committee prior to joining the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee.

Professor Sawers said:

"Throughout his achievements David has shown himself to be a true leader. He stayed true to the ambitions we all held for the Commonwealth Games – to showcase our city and our country in the best way possible to a global audience.

Knowing him well, I know he will be the first to credit his team, the efforts of the amazing clyde-sider volunteers and the citizens of this great city for all making the Games such a success. And I know David will continue to champion the skills of business and young people and ensure that Glasgow continues to support the delivery of many more Games in the years ahead."

Accepting the honour, and congratulating more than 500 graduating students and their families David Grevemberg said:

"I’m so grateful for this special honour and the opportunity it brings me to be part of a celebration which, for so many of us, marks the fact that years of hard work towards our goals have truly achieved something special.

Glasgow Caledonian University is a great institution and is a shining example of value-driven learning and of a place of excellence that widens the horizons of knowledge and of individuals in pursuit of common purpose.

Put in sporting terms graduation is that ‘Medal Moment’ the chance to stand on the podium and savour the victory cheers. The real challenge now for each one of us is how we use this success to push us to greater more ambitious future goals."

David joins an illustrious list of Honorary Graduates of Glasgow Caledonian University which includes Louise Martin, CBE, the CGF’s Honorary Secretary.
