(ATR) One Berlin sports official has a creative idea for cutting the costs of a possible Olympic bid.
State culture secretary Tim Renner said in a radio interview on Wednesday that IOC officials like president Thomas Bach may be invited to room with Berlin residents at the 2024 Summer Games to cut down on bid costs.
"We will propose it in our bid papers - couch-surfing for officials," Renner told RBB Radio.
"Why should they stay in hotels?"
Renner believes it may be a good way for visitors to take in the city.
"Then they finally experience something new - an exciting Berlin."
The budget for the Games is expected to be a hurdle for a possible Berlin bid.Karl Brenke of the German Institute for Economic Research said earlier this week that Berlin may not have the money to bid.
A decision from the DOSB, Germany’s Olympic committee, is expected in late March on whether to submit Hamburg or Berlin as a candidate for 2024.
Germany has hosted the Summer Olympics on two prior occasions - 1936 in Berlin and 1972 in Munich.
Boston and Rome have confirmed their intentions to bid. Paris will make a decision in April, and Budapest is conducting a feasibility study. Doha and Baku may also throw their hats in the ring.
