(ATR) After their names were deleted from the database of credentials for the 2017 AIBA Boxing World Championships in Hamburg, members of the federation's Executive Committee have had their information restored.
The EC voted near unanimously last month for a motion of no-confidence against AIBA president CK Wu. The EC alleges that Wu is mismanaging the federation and that it totters on the brink of bankruptcy due to a $10 million loan for which repayment is now being demanded.
Wu has refused to acknowledge the revolt that is taking place for the AIBA leadership. He has rejected efforts by an Interim Management Committee to take control of the federation. A court in Switzerland is now deciding whether the takeover is allowed under the AIBA statutes.
Lawyers for the EC were prepared to take the matter to the court but Wu relented on the credentials.
The 2017 AIBA World Championships will take place from Aug. 25 to Sep. 3.
Week of Summer World Championships
The Olympic Movement is back in action this week as hundreds of athletes compete for their shot at a world championship title.
Competitions began on Monday as the World Wrestling Championships kicked off in the future Olympic host city Paris.
Organized by United World Wrestling, the 2017 tournament marks the 14th edition of hosting combined men’s and women’s world championships by the federation. Men are competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines while women are competing in freestyle only.
The AccorHotels Arena, one of Paris 2024's Summer Olympics venues, is home to the championships.
The competition is being featured on the Olympic Channel and concludes on Aug. 27.
The Badminton World Federation World Championships also began on Monday, with Glasgow, Scotland playing host to the 2017 edition of the tournament.
The 6,000 seat Emirates Arena is the venue as the best men’s and women’s badminton players compete to determine the champions in singles and doubles.
The Total BWF World Championships also come to a close on Aug. 27.
The 2017 edition of the Canoe Sprint World Championships began Aug. 23 in Racice, Czech Republic.
Individuals and teams of two or four are competing in their respective disciplines, racing distances from 200 to 5,000 meters.
The event also features the new Paralympic sport paracanoe which made its debut at the Rio 2016 Games. The parasport debuted at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in 2009 and has remained on the championship program ever since.
Competition in Racice concludes on Aug. 27.
FINA Caught Off Guard by Barcelona Gesture
Spanish swimmer Fernando Álvarez remained in the starting bloc Saturday morning for one minute after the start of a heat in the 200m breaststroke at the FINA Masters World Champs in Budapest. While his competitors churned through the lanes, Alvarez stayed put, saying he was honoring the 14 people who were killed in the terrorist attack last week in Barcelona.
The swimmer says he asked officials from FINA for the memorial gesture, but was told there was no time.
In a statement, FINA says it was never informed about this particular request.
"In case a formal demand was received, FINA would obviously immediately consider the minute of silence," says the federation statement.
Alvarez admits his remembrance may have cost him the race.
"I started a minute late. But that doesn’t matter. What I was feeling was more than if I had won all of the gold medals in the world," says Alvarez.
"FINA naturally condemns and regrets the shocking events in Barcelona on August 17, 2017, and expresses its sincere sympathy for the families and friends of the victims," says the statement from the federation.
