(ATR) A handful of citizens voted against hosting Boston 2024 events in Brookline, Massachusetts.
On May 28, 157 residents voted in a non-binding referendum to determine whether the municipality should potentially host events for the 2024 Olympics. The result of the vote was an overwhelming no, with 111 citizens voting against hosting events.
The results of the referendum do not directly impact the Boston 2024 bid plan, for now. The Country Club, a prestigious golf club, located in Brookline was initially considered as the site for golf in the 2024 bid.
According to reports from the AP, citizens at the meeting said they were never consulted about hosting Olympic events leading to the results of the referendum. Brookline is a suburb of Boston with around 58,000 citizens.
Around the Rings reached out to the town of Brookline for comment on the town meeting, but did not receive a response.
Boston 2024 did not send a representative to the meeting, but sent a letter urging citizens to reconsider a vote until they reveal their revised bid plan.
Boston 2024 expects the bid plan to be released by June 30.
