Hamburg Drops 2024 Olympics Ambition
Germany’s hopes of hosting the summer or winter Games appears a long way off after Hamburg followed Munich this week in saying no to an Olympic bid.
The Hamburg Sports Federation on Tuesday decided against pursuing efforts to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics after the blow delivered by voters to Munich’s 2022 proposal.
"It would be careless to go forward with this now," federation president Guenter Ploss was quoted in a DPA report.
Lessons will be learned from the rejection of Munich’s 2022 bid plan in a referendum on Sunday, he added. Voters in four communities said no to a second consecutive Winter Olympic bid after the Bavarian city’s loss to PyeongChang in the 2018 contest.
"Applying for the Olympics is a marathon, not a sprint," said a spokesman for Hamburg’s government.
Hamburg wanted to bid for the 2012 Olympics but Germany chose Leipzig as its applicant city. The eastern German city failed to make the IOC’s shortlist of candidate cities in 2004.
Calls to Halt Lviv 2022
The leader of Ukraine’s United Center Party Viktor Baloha called for Ukraine to cancel its bid for the 2022 Olympics.
Baloha, who was elected to the Ukrainian parliament in 2012, mentioned high costs and the failed Munich referendums as reasons not to bid for the Olympics.
"Residents of the Bavarian referendum said ‘stop’ Olympics 2022," said Baloha in a statement.
"I am convinced that the Ukrainian authorities should take an example from them and withdraw its application to the International Olympic Committee."
Lviv officially announced its candidacy November 5. The deadline for cities to submit 2022 bids to the IOC is November 14.
USOC Extends CEO Blackmun
If the United States launches a bid for the 2024 Summer Games, CEO Scott Blackmun will play a major role after signing a four-year extension with the USOC.
The deal keeps Blackmun with the USOC through the Rio Olympics in 2016.
"This extension is an indication of the excellent job Scott has done the last four years," USOC chairman Larry Probst said in an email to Sports Business Journal.
