(ATR) The U.S. Olympic Committee is searching for a new international relations director following the resignation of veteran Greg Harney. Harney's imminent departure comes as the USOC prepares to enter a new contest for the 2016 Olympics.
Harney has been one of the constants for the USOC in the international arena, joining the organization in 1987. He was named to his current title of Managing Director, International Affairs in May 2003.
In a statement from the USOC, Harney says the timing is right for him.
"I committed to the organization that I would stay through the 2012 bid process. I have decided it is time for me to move on to pursue other interests and to spend more time with my family."
USOC chief executive Jim Scherr saluted Harney's tenure in Colorado Springs.
"There is no doubt that Greg's work on behalf of America's athletes had a significant impact on U.S. teams competing throughout the world," says Scherr.
Recruitment for a new international relations director is to begin immediately.
The vacancy comes as the USOC goes into its final preparations for the Turin Olympics and begins planning strategy for a 2016 Olympics bid.
