(ATR) The president of the Ghana Olympic Committee says a quest for the 2032 Olympics will be used to drive sports development in the country. Benson Tongo Baba spoke in Accra on the eve of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa assembly.
Ghana News Agency reports that Baba revealed that the minister for sport has written to the IOC to express interest in a bid and to learn the timetable for that campaign. Under current procedures the IOC vote for 2032 would take place in 2025.
"The idea might sound funny now, but it is one of the systematic approaches adopted by the nation to ensure the development of sports in the country," GNA quotes Baba.
He says hosting the All Africa Games will be an intermediate step.
Talk about an Olympic Games in Africa will pick up this week with the opening of the ANOCA assembly, a meeting which will include prominent delegations from the five 2012 bid cities as well as a speech from the IOC President Jacques Rogge.
Cape Town, South Africa, which campaigned for the 2004 Olympics, is the only African city to bid for the Olympics so far. With South Africa holding the FIFA World Cup in 2010, the experience could lead to another Olympic bid.
Other countries which have expressed an interest in the Olympics include Egypt and Uganda.
